India’s first lady of ‘revivalist’ haute couture Bina Modi will premiere a stunning bespoke fashion collection amidst UK and India’s glitterati, socialites and leading figures from the world of industry, the arts, community and politics, including Lakshmi Mittal, James Caan, KK Modi, SK Modi, philanthropists Ella Krasner and creatives Julien Mcdonald, Ozwald Boateng and Sacha Jafri, at the forthcoming Arts for India charity fundraiser event, to raise awareness and vital funds for a unique educational project – The Universe of Art.

Universe of Art is a unique Anglo-Indian art, culture and education project which will see the construction of the first private Fine Arts University in India together with a leading performing arts centre and an internationally recognised museum or gallery. This exceptional creative cluster, to be built across 100 acres of land near Modinagar, NCR Delhi, will further contribute to the cultural and economic renaissance of India with benefits impacting Asia and globally.

Taking place today - 15th of November 2012 - at the world-famous Saatchi Gallery in central London, the fashion show, which will take Diwali as its central theme, will feature all hand embroidered couture wear which resurrects the forgotten Parsi Gara style of embroidery. Bina Modi, who is an international designer based in Delhi, says of her collection: “We have revolutionised the Gara work into a hypnotic collection titled ‘The Majestic Wild’. It is reminiscent of the Maharaja period in India. The collection will include long jackets, voluminous skirts, cocktail dress and new-age Saris.

Bina’s passion for creating fine quality, hand-embroidered couture pieces began with her love for antique textiles and embroidery techniques, which has led her to collect exquisite pieces of art from around the world and use this as inspiration for her designs. Her creations are all bespoke and handcrafted by expert traditional craftsmen. Today her label ‘Bina’s’ has made a mark in the international fashion fraternity with her collections being showcased the world over. One of the greatest achievements for Bina is that she has given employment to over 3,000 men and women who now have a better livelihood.

The esteemed event will also include an evening of entertainment, fashion, gourmet cuisine and keynote speeches, including a presentation by the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community of the vision created with Porphyrios Associates of the Universe of Art project.

Arts for India has also partnered with Tanya Baxter Contemporary to raise funds through an auction at the event. Tanya Baxter Contemporary has worked with progressive Indian artists, as well as new and emerging Indian and international artists for many years and is keen to see the next generation of students supported by the proposed university. This collaboration reflects the desire to help young, Indian artists to flourish amidst India’s burgeoning arts scene. The auction will feature classic works by renowned artists, including the masters such as S. H. Raza and F.N Souza, and the next generation such as Sacha Jafri, Ingrid Baars, Crispin Gurholt, Jannis Markopolous and JayShree Kapoor. The event is sponsored by Theo Fennell and OG by les Eoliers.
